This half-day course offers a comprehensive introduction to the process of selecting and purchasing stone from a quarry, combining theoretical insights with hands-on skill development. Participants will learn how to identify stone types suitable for walling, weigh the pros and cons of various stones to make informed purchasing decisions, choose appropriate tools, and develop practical skills in shaping and splitting stone. Completion of our Introduction to Dry Stone Walling Course is recommended, as a foundational understanding of wall-building techniques is assumed.

How to select stone - advantages and disadvantages of different stone types

Selecting Tools - what tools are available and what is their purpose

Shaping and traditional methods of cutting Stone - a lesson in how to shape different stone types and using plug and feathers to cut large stone

Practical Shaping - using tools and having a go yourself
Prerequisites:

Students are requested to complete an Introduction to Dry Stone Walling Course, or similar foundational course, before attending this advanced course to gain maximum value for your time. This course builds on the foundation knowledge that you have obtained in your Introduction course. No wall building techniques are taught during this course.
